Dr. Swavely has 17 years of teaching experience that includes high school English, undergraduate ESL reading and writing courses, Intensive English Language Program courses, undergraduate education courses, and graduate level TESOL courses. She has conducted several studies on ESL students' responses to reading and writing assignments in undergraduate courses, as well as their responses to teacher feedback on their compositions. Upon receiving a grant from the Wachovia Foundation in 2004, she designed, implemented, and researched a school-based language teacher education program that certified elementary teachers in ESL. Her current work in language teacher education curriculum design continues to be informed by this research.


IS EVENTS:

Teacher Education Interest Section, Friday, November 30 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Drexel University (address below). This month's discussion will focus on Pennsylvania's new Keystone exams for secondary students, implications for ELLs, and implications for teacher education.

We will also discuss any updates on PDE's review of our ESL Certificate Programs.

As before, it would be great if you could bring a small snack to share.  I'll bring cheese and crackers again.

Discussion Topics: Addressing PDE competencies in our teacher ed programs (i.e. Program Specialist: ESL Certificate and the required ESL course) - How have we addressed the competencies in our programs and courses? What dilemmas have we experienced? I  encourage everyone to bring relevant syllabi and/or program materials to discuss. I will bring copies of the competencies.
